How to feed a pug: features of the diet

The breed of pugs differs not only in compact size and original appearance, but also in physiological characteristics (for example, increased gastrointestinal sensitivity and tendency to obesity), therefore When compiling a diet, a competent approach is important.

Which products are most preferable for this breed, and which, on the contrary, are undesirable? What is the daily need of a pug (adult and puppy) for food and what to look for when choosing dry food?

Natural food at home

Regardless of the age of the dog, properly selected and cooked food is essential to maintain the health and activity of the pet. So, natural nutrition includes:

  1. Low-fat quality meat and offal (mainly lean beef, chicken backs and wings - 100-200 grams up to 2 times a day).
  2. Milk and dairy products (especially cottage cheese - in the amount of 75 - 100 g of the total diet).
  3. Raw marine fish fillet (boneless). The daily norm is 100 - 200 g.
  4. Well-boiled cereals (buckwheat, oatmeal, rice) with the addition of minced meat, herbs, vegetables and fruits.
  5. Canned fish (pink salmon, mackerel, etc.).
  6. Fruits (apples, bananas, etc.) and vegetables (zucchini, broccoli, carrots, cucumbers, bell peppers, etc.).
  7. Greens (lettuce, dill, etc.).

According to dog breeders, natural food should consist of about 70% of meat / fish products and the remaining 30% - of cereals, fresh vegetables and fruits, as well as milk and dairy products.

It is also worth noting that if a pet is fed exclusively with natural food, the animal’s body may not receive any important vitamins and minerals. Therefore, vitamin - mineral complexes (for example, Hokamix30, Beaphar Duo Active Pasta, etc.) must be added to the diet.

General Nutrition Tips

Pugs, like many other dogs, can eat everything. However, to feed this breed with food "off the table" categorically not: they have a very sensitive gastrointestinal tract, because of which the dog can often get sick or die at all.

Pugs are prone to obesity. That is why doggies should be fed according to a specific regimen at the same time, which is appropriate for the age of the dog. If the pug refuses to eat, then it is better to remove the bowl of food in a cold place and put only the next feeding.

You also can’t offer pugs supplement - a standard portion is enough to fill the dog.

Mandatory in the diet of representatives of this breed should be pure water (not from the tap) and milk, which helps the pug fight heartburn (and they suffer from it quite often).

Dogs of this breed should preferably be given raw meat without salting it. It is better if they are low-fat varieties (poultry, beef). Bones of a bird are obligatory, however they should be crude, since the pug’s boiled stomach simply will not digest. Pets can and should cook stewed vegetables, they can be slightly salted.

As for dry food, it is much more convenient to use than natural food. The main thing is to choose a suitable and very high-quality feed for the pug.

Which food is better: natural or dry food?

This is a question that is constantly being discussed not only by animal owners, but also by professional dog handlers. According to experts, natural food is acceptable for pugs, regardless of their age. How to feed a pug puppy, if you opted for natural products?

Not only puppies, but also adult animals need fermented milk products, including cottage cheese. They should be about 100 grams of the total diet. Do not forget about cereals (buckwheat, rice, oatmeal). Two puppies, and adults, once a day, give raw meat (100-200 g). A correctly selected daily diet allows natural products to be fully absorbed. The composition of natural nutrition and its calorie content can be adjusted depending on the season and the general health of the animal.

Fish or meat products when feeding your pet natural food should make up about 70% of the total mass. The disadvantages of this method, the owners attribute the need to use additional vitamins and minerals, the time it takes to prepare, and the high cost of the products.

Canned food

If you have not yet decided what kind of food to feed the pug, we recommend paying attention to high-quality canned food, which today is presented in a large assortment in pet stores. It can be added to homemade food. This type of feed is also convenient because it is perfectly balanced, it includes all the necessary minerals and vitamins necessary for the dog. But his choice should be approached with caution, because on the market there are not only truly high-quality products, but also compounds that can hardly be called feed.

Choose the products of well-known and well-established manufacturers, ask the opinion of the breeder from whom you will buy a puppy, or contact your veterinarian for help.

Dry feed

When there is a conversation between pet owners about how to feed a pug, many people are very skeptical about dry food. And this is most often due to poor experience in acquiring a low-quality product.

To finally decide what to feed the pug, read the rules that should be followed when using dry food:

  • do not alternate feeds from different manufacturers,
  • do not mix different compounds in one feeding,
  • do not give the pug vitamin or mineral supplements,
  • do not pour boiling water over the food - most vitamins will be destroyed,
  • Do not alternate natural nutrition with dry food.

Pugs, who are fed with dry finished products, can be used to make kefir, yogurt or milk, and soak the granules. Without fear, give your pet fresh vegetables and fruits as a treat. The dog should always have free access to fresh clean water. Changing the diet, do it gradually, carefully monitor the condition of your pet.

From six months to a year, pug puppies are suitable for the Junior category, and later - up to seven years - for the Standard category. It should be understood that dry food has not yet been created, which is ideal for all dogs. One dog eats food of a certain kind with great pleasure, and the other, sniffing it, leaves offended.

Owners of animals with the help of an experienced veterinarian should choose the very composition that is ideal for your little friend. Pug breeders recommend the following brands:

What foods are forbidden to pugs?

Pet owners need to know what pugs are strictly forbidden to feed, regardless of the age of the pet. These products include:

  • pork,
  • spices and smoked meats,
  • fatty, fried and salty foods,
  • sugar,
  • White bread,
  • flour products
  • mayonnaise,
  • sour cream,
  • raw egg white.

Obesity is a Serious Disease

Pug is a big fan of delicious food. Dogs of this breed, as a rule, eat absolutely everything, to the last crumbs, regardless of the size of the portion. In addition, these animals like to beg for food between feedings, but this behavior should not be encouraged. Never give your pet snacks between meals. Failure to comply with these rules most often causes obesity.

A healthy animal receiving a balanced diet is a dense, muscular, obese dog. Failures in the feeding mode provoke diseases of the heart and blood vessels, which reduces the life expectancy of a pug. Make a habit of weighing a pug monthly. This will help you control his weight and, if necessary, adjust the mode and quality of food.

At the first sign of excess weight, reduce the serving size, consult your veterinarian, and gradually transfer it to diet food.

Pugs are smart and kind companions. Providing the dog with proper care, a healthy and balanced diet, you will enjoy communicating with an affectionate and friendly four-legged friend for a long time.

Natural food or artificial feed?

To the question of what pugs eat and how to feed them, there is such a point of view: a dog is a carnivore and you need to feed it with food containing everything you need for the predator. The digestive system of the animal is able to digest meat and bones - Salmonella and other bacteria are quickly killed in its body.

First of all, when feeding natural products, the dog should be given meat of chickens, rabbit, veal and lamb. It is advisable to give meat raw, as it retains more vitamins and is better digested. Vegetables are not always a source of vitamins.

The liver contains a large amount of vitamin A, and this product should be given with caution to the animal.

The fish is given in boiled form, it is rich in calcium and phosphorus.

The advantage of industrial feed is that it contains a lot of protein, low fat and calories.

So what is better? Perhaps everyone will choose the best option for their pet on their own or with the help of a specialist.

It is wise to choose a menu for a pug and follow it is quite expensive, so the finished food solves such issues.

If the animal is predisposed to diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, add dairy products to dry food twice a week.

Pros and Cons of Home Meal

Dogs are known to use high temperatures in cooking. Heat treatment of any product leads to the loss of nutrients, as well as vitamins and minerals. Therefore, the dog may be short of important substances and elements.

Boiled food is an unhealthy product. It lacks vitamins and minerals, enzymes and amino acids. This product is of little use, the animal’s immune system is weakened, which causes various diseases. Pancreatic gland is overloaded and the production of enzymes for digestion becomes less pronounced.

As mentioned above, it is necessary to give raw meat and fresh products, as well as vitamin supplements. There is no need to give a vitamin complex at each feeding. Balance is achieved gradually, naturally - as it happens in nature.

In any case, you should always consult with a specialist, especially on such an important issue as nutrition.

So, the following products are allowed:

  • meat. It’s preferable for pugs to be non-greasy - this is rabbit meat, chicken, turkey, lamb, veal,
  • vegetables. Carrots, eggplant, garlic, cabbage, greens. They are well crushed and given with the main feed,
  • cereals. Buckwheat and Hercules, with the exception of corn, rice and millet,
  • dairy products, cheese, cottage cheese,
  • the eggs. Boiled chicken yolks and quail eggs.

List of prohibited products:

  • flour and pasta
  • semolina,
  • corn,
  • potatoes,
  • sugar and confectionery,
  • bread,
  • smoked meats and pickles.

Dry food

Dry foods have several advantages over natural foods, eg:

  1. They are convenient to store.
  2. Allow to calculate the daily rate with accuracy (in grams).
  3. Contain all the necessary vitamin supplements.
  4. Adapted for dogs with obesity, digestive upset or allergy prone.

It is important to remember that high-quality dry food cannot be too cheap. Such a product can only provoke a set of excess weight and problems with the digestive tract. Therefore, before buying, you must carefully read the composition of the feed (if soy and corn are present in the composition, this indicates its low quality).

Among dog breeders, the most popular feeds are:

Advantages and disadvantages of feed

One of the main disadvantages of dry feed is their artificiality and the presence of chemical additives. This is often a lack of economy-class feed.

It is worth approaching the right choice of food - in this matter it is better to consult a veterinarian. In some cases, animals fed exclusively dry food developed liver, kidney, and pancreas diseases.

The benefits of industrial feeds are nutritional balance. They have all the beneficial vitamins and amino acids.

If you give the dog artificial food, it is prohibited:

  • combine feed from different manufacturers,
  • give the dog vitamin and other supplements,
  • pour food with boiling water,
  • alternate feed and natural food,
  • industrial food needs to be selected individually - some pets may have an allergy. It is advisable to choose hypoallergenic feeds of premium brands Hill’s, Acana, Eukanuba, etc. If you decide to switch to a different feed, it will take a week for the gastrointestinal tract to adapt to new food intake. If the puppy refuses to accept dry food, it is necessary to add a little warm water to it.

Dry food labeled with grain-free (diet-free) - diet and low-calorie. It is advisable to give dogs with obesity.

Canned cereals with meat - one of the types of wet food, does not require the addition of dry food. They also have all the ingredients necessary for the development of a pet.

If you feed the dog only with wet food, your little friend will eat food quickly without chewing - this is harmful to his gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, alternate dry and wet food.

According to reviews, the following were most popular among dry feeds:

The rules of healthy eating

When feeding a pug, several rules must be observed:

  1. In no case should you mix natural food and industrial feed (for example, porridge in the morning and dry food in the evening). Otherwise, the pet may have serious digestive problems.
  2. Any new product must be introduced into the diet gradually (within 2 weeks).
  3. In the place where the dog eats, there should always be a bowl of fresh water.
  4. It is advisable to add vitamins with calcium to homemade food.

What vitamins are needed?

Vitamins that a pug needs to feel good:

  • vitamin A. It is necessary for the good development of pug puppies, including the period of mating, pregnancy, lactation. It is found in tomatoes, herbs, carrots, liver, milk, fish oil and egg yolk,
  • vitamin b. In order for the pug's skin and muscles to be healthy and strong, this vitamin is needed. It is found in the liver, brewer's yeast, dairy products and herbs,
  • vitamin C. Prevents diseases of the gums and joints, boosts the body's immune system. It is found in fruits and vegetables,
  • vitamin D. Essential for a growing dog - it prevents rickets, strengthens bones,
  • vitamin e. It is a breeding vitamin, pugs need during periods of mating animals and pregnancy. Contained in beets, carrots, herbs and cereals.

Thus, you can feed a pug with high-quality and fresh products in a warm form (if we are talking about homemade food) or specialized feeds. If a dog has a negative reaction to what he has eaten (belching, nausea, itching, etc.), it is necessary to temporarily exclude the product from the diet and consult with a specialist about the causes of this phenomenon.

It is also important to remember that nutrition should be strictly dosed. (preferably at the same time) and do not overfeed the pet. These simple recommendations will help keep the four-legged friend as healthy and active as possible for many years.
