Sphinx Peterbald is a very friendly and graceful breed. These cats do not want to be alone. They are strongly attached to their master, and also lovingly relate to other family members. The main difference from almost all other breeds is the lack of wool. Such cats are no longer considered some kind of exotic, but become more popular every year. Sphinx is a smart and loving animal.

Origin history

The St. Petersburg or St. Petersburg cat breed is very young. Russian felinologists brought her out only in the early 90s of the XX century. The main task of the breeders was to create such a pet that combines the elegance of the Siamese and the original appearance of hairless sphinxes.

For breeding, only the "elite" was chosen among the representatives of these breeds. The little sphinxes of the Peterbalds received only the best qualities from their parents. From a brutal father - a hairless coat, and from a mother (Siamese) - slim physique and unusual oriental appearance with a peculiar character.

At the next stage, breeders had to achieve the consolidation of characteristic eastern features in the cat breed Peterbald. For this, an additional crossing was carried out with other oriental breeds. To achieve official recognition of the cat "St. Petersburg Sphinx" from the American association TICA failed only in the late 90's. By this time, the breed has already been fully formed. Due to the presence of a “naked” gene in DNA, it was decided to prohibit further mating of Peterbald with Don Sphinxes.

Breed description

Peterbald has every right to be called a glamorous breed of cats. Thanks to their grace, they are similar to models walking on the catwalk. Breed Standards:

  1. These pets have a rather small body, which is slim and flexible. The chest and hips are almost the same width. St. Petersburg sphinxes have rounded ribs.
  2. The head of the animals has the shape of a wedge, which starts from the nose and goes along the line to the ears. The muzzle is often narrow.
  3. Cats usually weigh up to 3.5 kg and cats weigh up to 5 kg.
  4. Peterbalds have a slender and long neck, which is fully proportional to the body.
  5. In adults, long legs with very thick pads.
  6. The tail is rather thin with a sharp end.
  7. A long nose that has a very neat shape.
  8. Flat forehead.
  9. The skin of the representatives of this breed is soft and mobile. She folds all over her body and head. These cats don’t have wool, but kids can sometimes observe a light fluff. He will disappear when the kitten is 1.5−2 years.
  10. Big ears that are wide apart.
  11. Eyes Asian with a thin slit.
  12. The mustache is crimped.

Color can be quite varied. There are chocolate, cream, pathicolor and other shades. Plants come across very rarely. Often there are age spots on the skin. Peterbalds can also be not only bald. There are such skin integuments:

  1. Brush. The coat of the kitten is very soft. It can also be vice versa - hard, hard bristles.
  2. Brush point. In this case, the hair is slightly shorter than in the first, but the pet has a fluffy tail. When the kitten grows up, the hairline will remain only on the limbs and face.
  3. Flock. Rare and short hairs. Mustache and eyebrows are completely absent.
  4. Well-born. A kitten is born completely naked. A special skin secret creates the impression that the baby's skin is made of rubber. It feels like plasticine to the touch.
  5. Naked. It is born with a small amount of wool, but after a while it disappears.
  6. Velours. After some time after birth, the hair remains only on its paws. She is very reminiscent of velor.

Each particular species is of great value among its admirers. Ideal representatives of Peterbalds are cats that are completely devoid of hair. They are brought to the exhibition. St. Petersburg brush is used for breeding.

Peterbold character

The St. Petersburg sphinxes have a rather pleasant and soft character, in which, in addition to the eastern riddle, there is also a sunny temperament. These pets are very friendly, sociable and wholeheartedly love their owners. They are not afraid and do not hide from strangers, so the arrival of guests cannot be a problem. They are ready to be friends with any person. Petersburgers love to talk, but have a rather loud voice.

Sometimes they can start yelling. This usually happens if you leave them alone, do not take them to bed or feed them on time. Representatives of this breed are very fond of sitting on their hands and stroking behind the ear. They immediately begin to purr. With their habits, peterbalds earned the title of “cat-dogs”.

They are very devoted to the whole family, but at the same time they single out their leader on their own. It is after him that the pet will continuously follow. It’s unlikely to be left alone without a cat society. The animal wants to always be in the know and feel its importance. Cats of this breed are very curious and constantly want to learn something new from the world around them. If they are locked in a separate room, they will always look for a way to get out. There is no way to overcome the curiosity of Peterbald.

Although the Sphinxes of St. Petersburg have Siamese genes, revenge and aggression are not at all characteristic of them. But during the game, getting into a rage, they can release their claws or even bite. With children, this breed very quickly finds a common language. With any animals (even dogs) can get along well. St. Petersburg sphinxes have a very sharp mind and high intelligence. They are quite easy to accustom to the tray. Also, the ingenuity of these cats allows you to learn some commands, for example, "lie down" or "walk".

Health and Disease

Petersburg sphinxes are a very young breed. This leads to the fact that while there are no hereditary diseases (or they are not identified). Cats have pretty good health with strong immunity. If they are provided with adequate care, vaccinations and deworming in time, then there will be no problems with the pet.

On average, peterbalds live from 13 to 15 years. But the owners need to remember that naked cats can have diseases that are peculiar to them. Most often these are colds. This makes it necessary to create comfortable conditions for the sphinxes. Be sure to eliminate all drafts and eliminate overheating or hypothermia.

The heat of the St. Petersburg breed is simply necessary, but it is impossible to overdo it.

Most owners buy special warm clothes for their pets that can comfortably survive the cold season. It is also worth understanding the desire of an animal to climb under a blanket to a person.

Allergic rashes can also be a frequent ailment in this breed. If this happened once, then, most likely, rashes will accompany the cat throughout life. Dealing with allergies is quite simple with acne lotion. You need to pay attention to it on time., since ordinary pimples can go into abscesses.

The most dangerous ailment for the breed is congenital underdevelopment of the thymus. This is a special body that is responsible for the proper development of the body, as well as for the immune system. With this disease, kittens die at an early age.

Maintenance and care

Caring for the St. Petersburg sphinxes does not cause much difficulty and hassle. Lack of wool is the main advantage that allows cats not to be combed out. But still, the owner will have certain responsibilities:

  1. Every day you need to wipe your eyes so that mucus does not accumulate.
  2. Periodically brush your teeth and ears.
  3. Cut the claws.

Regarding the bathing of a cat of the St. Petersburg breed, many owners were divided in opinion. The skin of the pet is naturally coated with a special lubricant that performs a protective function. If you bathe too often, this plaque will be washed off, which will lead to stress in the animal. But large accumulations of grease must still be removed.

Some sphinx owners use a regular sponge or wet towel. Other owners bathe cats with a special shampoo, and then wipe their pets dry with a soft towel. It must be remembered that under prolonged exposure to solar ultraviolet, the skin of peterbalds will necessarily burn, but a mild, moderate tan will only bring benefits.

So that the skin does not dry out and does not weather, child creams should be used.

The absence of hair makes the St. Petersburg Sphinxes have a quick metabolism, therefore they always have an excellent appetite. As the main feed, it is necessary to use dry species. But the main thing is to ensure that the food is completely balanced and contains all the necessary trace elements and vitamins. You can determine the correct selection of the diet with a protective lubricant. If it is too much, it means that something is wrong.

This breed is exclusively domestic, its representatives are extremely undesirable contacts with the street and street animals. In addition, direct sunlight is harmful to the sphinxes, not restrained even by window glass. Skin contact with grass can cause allergic reactions and burns.

The character of the St. Petersburg Sphinx

Like most sphinxes, petebolds are very sociable creatures who cannot stand long loneliness. They need almost constant contact with someone, they even prefer to sleep in the immediate vicinity of the owner or other pets. They miss people very much, in the evening they may require an exorbitant amount of attention, love and affection.

Petersburgers are very talkative cats. Their set of sounds is very extensive, and the radio mode does not turn off even in a dream. They purr, meow, snort, yap and emit a large number of other sound combinations. The voice of peterbolds is hoarse, and the tone of the sounds changes depending on the mood.

It is almost impossible to see the aggressive St. Petersburg Sphinx - they are too peaceful and patient creatures. They are not inclined to insults and revenge, unlike their oriental ancestors, they easily forgive everything except inattention. Very friendly, able to get along with any other pet, if he does not show aggression to him.

Reference! It is worth considering that in relation to animals, sphinxes can be intrusive.

Another characteristic is curiosity and mobility. Neva handsome men practically do not sit still - they need to climb, jump, run, play without end and edge. It is necessary to provide them with a large number of safe toys and, if possible, provide access to the top tours, otherwise they may find it themselves, and this is fraught with falls and injuries.

Well amenable to training, with due diligence, simple commands are easily learned. They perfectly remember the toilet and are very clean.

Buying a kitten

Petersburg sphinxes are currently in moderate demand. In Western countries, this breed has not yet managed to find wide distribution. Petersburg beauties have just begun to gain popularity.

In Russia, there are not so many nurseries involved in breeding peterbolds. The price of kittens that do not meet the criteria of the exhibitions is from 5 to 15 thousand rubles. The cost of exhibition copies can reach up to 40 thousand rubles.

Small representatives of the breed can only be taken after they have reached the age of three months. If you separate the kitten from its mother earlier, then it will be hard to worry about, which can affect health.

Petersburgs are suitable for the responsible owner. Kittens need to be treated with special care, monitor them and carry out all the required procedures on time. Also this breed needs a lot of affection. Owners of such cats give them love, and in return receive much more of this bright feeling.

Possible problems

Despite the lack of hair, the main problem of sphinxes is saliva and allergies to it in humans, especially in children. Piterbalds lick often and often, drying saliva evaporates and can cause allergic reactions and diseases, up to bronchial asthma. Peeling skin particles are also a strong allergen.

Petersburgers require careful care and proper nutrition, which entails serious financial expenses. Animals are designed to live exclusively in four walls; any contact with the environment is undesirable.

It is not recommended to bring the St. Petersburg sphinxes to those who are almost never at home - animals can not stand loneliness, suffer and become depressed until death.

Owner reviews

My cat never wakes me up, and sits next to me and waits for how long I need until I myself wake up. He gladly catches mice and always brings prey to show off. Often I give my little chicken chicken, paws and heads, since he loves natural food. Dry food is pretty cool.

The Petersburg Sphinx really has a doglike character.Constantly wants attention to himself, and therefore follows on the heels. If you sit down somewhere, the cat immediately perches nearby. He is not forgotten. He pays attention to other household members only when I am not at home. And usually it always bothers me only. My cat is really kind.

My kitty's name is Valya. She has a very loud and sometimes even unpleasant voice. Usually screams when something does not suit her. Loves the company of people. If you accidentally close it in a room, it will immediately begin to make noise. He always sleeps only near me. There is not a single gram of egoism in it, which can often be found in other cat breeds. Peterbald is a great friend and companion. These pets get along well with people and other animals.

Almost a year ago, we were presented with a cat of the breed St. Petersburg Sphinx. We decided to call him Buddy. Pretty quickly it turned out to accustom him to the tray. I have never been capricious. But harmfulness appeared within six months. The friend became impudent and spoiled. It began, probably due to the fact that we always forgive him. He loves the caress of his masters and even strangers. Sometimes he climbs kissing. Though harmful, but kind.

Caring for sphinxes involves some nuances that differ from caring for other breeds. Care includes regular bathing, eating and playing games.

An animal needs to be trained in bathing from a very young age so that it does not become psychological trauma and unnecessary stress for it. Bathing is carried out in hot water of the body temperature of the animal (38-40 degrees) using special shampoos.

Important! After water procedures, the cat is wrapped in a warm terry towel and the skin is thoroughly dried to avoid hypothermia.

Bathing can be replaced by regular rubbing of the skin with wet wipes that do not contain alcohol. To avoid drying out the skin of the animal, use baby oils that do not contain fragrances.

Peterbolds have an increased metabolism, so they have certain requirements for their diet. It is important to balance the feed correctly so that the pet does not feel hungry and does not play the “excavator” in the bowl with the feed.

Feeding can be carried out both with industrial feed of a super-premium class, and with natural food. Selection of food will take some time to determine the proportions of meat, fish, cottage cheese and cereals. In the summer, the meat component should occupy at least 60% of the total feed mass, in winter the percentage of animal protein rises to 80%. The rest should include cereals and vegetables.

When using industrial feed, breeders recommend contacting brands like Royal Canin Adult Sphynx 33, Pro Nature, Pro Plan, Hills, Acana, Orijen, Iams. The main requirement is the availability of free fresh cool water.

Petersburgers are forbidden to give:

  • fatty dishes
  • smoked, pickled,
  • sweets,
  • a large number of legumes
  • fried food.

Caring for your ears, eyes and nails

Eye care involves regular rubbing with a cloth or swab dipped in warm water. Due to the lack of eyelashes in the corners of the eyes, the ocular mucous secret accumulates during the day and night, which needs to be removed. The sphinx ears are treated in the same way.

The claws are regularly trimmed with a sharp guillotine or claw cutter, previously we already wrote how to cut the claws of a cat correctly. A prerequisite is the presence of a claw point in the house. You need to accustom to a claw-brush and a tray from an early age, then Peterbald will not add to the owners of household problems.

After visiting the toilet, the animal is recommended to wipe the perineum and anus with wet wipes without alcohol and perfumes.

Peterbald kitten: how to choose and its price

It is better to buy kittens at the age of three to four months. An earlier weaning from the mother will cause stress and anxiety for the baby, which will affect its development and health. When choosing kittens, you need to pay attention to the breeder’s documents, the pedigree of the animals, and the appearance of the pet. Pay attention to the condition of the ears, eyes, skin.

It is worth observing the activity of the animal - true St. Petersburg sphinxes are extremely active and curious, a sluggish animal is a sick animal.

The cost of the St. Petersburg sphinx, depending on the class, ranges from 5000-25000 rubles. The price of a peterbold for breeding is set by each nursery independently and depends on the class, rarity of color and phenotype of the kitten.

Breed breeding

Petersburgers are few in number, as this is a very young breed. The number of nurseries is also small. Crossing is allowed with orientals, Siamese, Javanedis, Balinese. Crossing the St. Petersburg sphinx with other sphinxes is strictly prohibited by breeding rules. • Wipe your pet daily
  • Keep your ears and eyes clean.
  • Cut the claws in time
  • Teach your pet to the claw-tip, it is best to do this from early childhood

Make sure that the animal gets a sufficient amount of the necessary vitamins and minerals.

This breed of cats is very interesting and funny, with such a pet you will never have to get bored.

Where to buy Peterbold, price

Petersburg sphinxes at present cannot boast of frantic demand. In Europe and America, the breed has not yet found wide distribution, the Neva handsome is just gaining popularity.

There are not so many nurseries in Russia. The cost of kittens is from 5000 to 15000 rubles. These will be kids who do not meet the standards and established exhibition standards. But the exhibition kittens of Peterbald, which are more difficult to acquire than ordinary ones, will cost more - up to 40,000 rubles.

Small peterbolds can be taken home after they reach three months of age. If you do this earlier, the baby will have a hard time surviving separation from his mother, which will not slow down his development and health.
